Charlotte 10 at Salisbury 14

Van Egger's hot play of late was somewhat cooled down by the Charlotte defense.  He managed 14 completions on 29 attempts for 148yds.  Not the big games we've seen the past couple of weeks.  But Salisbury got just what they needed from HB David Harley who ran up 192yds on 19 carries.  For all the talk of other backs in the league very little has been written about Harley who now leads the league in rushing.  He has yet to run for a TD this season, but he has been picking up yards in big chunks.  In this game for example he had four carries for 20yds or more.  The big play from Harley has been a big reason for Salisbury's success this year and he consistently does it every week.  Salisbury goes to Asheville next week in what should be a hard fought game.

Retired Charlotte TE Tim Mtchell played in many a close game against the Popes.  Mitchell is the biggest star in Charlotte's near past and he was on the sidelines today watching the player he feels is the best TE the league has ever seen Jose Wakeman of Salisbury.  "Since day one this guy has been nothing but a solid performer for Salisbury.  He's been asked to play many roles on their offense and he's always done it."  But Mitchell was quick to point out that he was happy to see Cash Johnson stepping up his play for Charlotte with 9 receptions for 66yds and a TD.  "Charlotte football doesn't change it's a simple strategy.  We like close hard fought games.  We'd prefer to hit someone than do it the easy way.  I'm glad to see Cash starting to embrace this because you need a good dependable TE in this offense to make it successful."  QB Royce Scott continues to improve week to week going 24/38 for 194yds with 1TD and HB Kelvin Ingram continued his good season with 49yds on 13 carries.  Charlotte's pass defense continues to play well with CB Roderick Anderson leading the way today with 11 tackles and 2 knockdowns.  This would have been a huge win for Charlotte but as it is they slip a game behind Gastonia and Greensboro in the race for the playoffs.  Next week they host Gastonia in what has to be the game of the week.

Winston-Salem 7 at Burlington 30

With 10:00 left in the game the score was Burlington 13 to Winston-Salem 7, so this game was not the blowout it ended in until the 4th quarter.  The blowout came from a nice drive and an Anthony Palmer punt return to put Burlington up 27-7.  It was not a stellar performance for the Burlington running game.  Dino Snider had 75yds on 20 carries and Greg Caufield managed only 52yds on 16 carries.  But Thaddeus Schlotter had a strong game 18/31 for 327yds 2TDs 1Int.  And Leon Glenn and Todd Dirks both had big games combinging for 11 receptions and 277yds with 1TD.  The key though to this win for Burlington was their defense that managed 12 sacks on young QB James Martin.  LB Arnold Campbell had 4 sacks and 3 tackles to lead the defense.  Burlington hosts Durham next week in another division matchup.

James Martin has not been spectacular for Winston-Salem but he shows signs of being a good QB.  9/31 for 104yds with 1TD is not a very good game, but under constant pressure and not fumbling or throwing interceptions says something.  HB Frank Klusmire had a good game getting 40yds on only 11 carries.  Perhaps they should have run the ball a bit more.  But no matter they kept in a game into the 4th quarter.  But not able to protect the QB hurts when you're playing comeback.  The defense played better than they have lead by S Mitchell Hislop who had 10 tackles and 1 knockdown.  Myron Collins added 8 tackles and an interception.  The Twins host Greensboro next week and hope to play spoiler to the Patriots dreams of making the playoffs.

Wilson 14 at Kinston 26

Kinston put themselves in a solid position to win the
Coastal Division today with a win over Wilson. It
puts Kinston at 4-3 and 3-0 in the division. It is
just Kinston and Raleigh now to play it out, they meet
in week 10 and week 12. Marion Sorenson had another
solid game 18/25 for 221yds 2TDs 1Int and got good
support from his running game Eric Debow had 85yds on
27 carries and Maurice Bloom pitched in 48yds on 14
carries. Matt Trumbull was the main guy receiving
with 80yds and a TD on 6 receptions. Very good game
from veteran CB and ex Wilson Tob Terrence Love who
had 5 tackles 2 knockdowns and 1 Int. Turnovers were
the key for Kinston in this game as their offense
struggled a bit in the second half. Kinston hopes to
keep up their domination of the division next week in
Rocky Mount.

Wilson had hoped that with a win today they would put
themselves in with a chance to win the Division, but
now those hopes are gone and Wilson has to contend
themselves with trying to make the most of a bad year.
Their offense has show real improvement the past few
weeks, but 4 turnovers today and a struggling passing
defense hurt them. Derrick Smith had a sloppy game
going 18/37 for 219yds with 1TD, 2Ints, and a fumble.
The positive point for Wilson fans was the solid play
of top receivers Deion Scroggins and Wortham Wainright
who combined for 13 catches 198yds and a TD. The
defense struggled to keep Marion Sorenson in check
and with turnovers abounding on offense the defense
had their hands fool. They did a big touchdown from
DT Marty Cook who also had 2 tackles and 2 sacks on
the day. LB Douglas Cameron filling in for injured
Anthony Mitkiff had a solid game with 11 tackles.
Wilson hosts Raleigh next week and will have to get
their pass defense in gear if they hope to stop Tom
Smythe and his passing game.

Rocky Mount 7 at Gastonia 13

Gastonia came into their week 7 matchup feeling very
confident. They felt as though they were one of the 3
best teams in the league as did most observers, and
Rocky Mount is a struggling team, with no real hope
for this season. In the end Rocky Mount almost took
this game led by a new starting QB. Gastonia's one
weakness is their running game and it hut them again
today with HB Konrad Wahler manager only 28yds on 14
carries. Darrell Sparks once again had to step up and
he did putting up solid number 22/39 for 250yds 1TD
and 1Int. He got another big game from Olav Flores
who had 5 receptions for 105yds, the key being a 70yd
TD pass late in the game. Flore made the catch then
faked out one defender and outran the last on a 3rd
and 1 play that sealed the victory for Gastonia. TE
Lionel Travers also had a good game with 9 catches for
60yds. He filled in as their running game struggled.
The key to this victory though was the defense led by
DE Joel Candy with 4 tackles and 4 sacks. They kept
constant pressure on newly acquired QB Jon Query and
though he gave them fits they were able to keep him
and HB Bernie Hall in check. Gastonia goes on the
road to Charlotte next week.

Stephen Caufield sat the bench today as Rocky Mount
tried a new starting QB for the first time since
probably 2000. Jon Query was recenlty acquired from
Wilson and started the game off with a bang his first
throw a 77yd TD pass. He would go on to play a solid
game, but under constant pressure and with good
coverage Gastonia's defense would keep him in check
12/23 for 255yds 1TD. Newly acquired HB Bernie Hall
continued to look good for Rocky Mount getting 58yds
on 14 carries and WR Tad Hamm continued his standout
season with 131yds on 3 receptions and a TD. All in
all it was a good game for Rocky Mount, but not enough
to get the win. Veteran LB Wildon Clark led the
defense with 8 tackles 1 sack and 1 knockdown, but in
the end Sparks and company proved too much as the
Leafs gave up a late touchdown. The Leafs host
Kinston next week hoping to get their first division
win of the season.
