The Leafs Let Caldwell Go

In 2008 Romeo Caldwell took over the Rocky Mount head coaching job and took the team to a 7-5 record and captured the wild card spot.  The last two seasons have not gone so well slipping to 5-7 in 2009 and 3-8-1 this season.  Despite the big win over Kinston to close out the season Caldwell was not able to save his job.

Jack Deloplaine

Deloplaine was handed his walking papers today after Asheville finished 1-11 for their second season in a row.  Deloplaine also traded number 1 draft pick and rookie sensation Ricardo Phillips to the Burlington Bees at the beginning of the season.  No one had expected Phillips would make such an impact on the season, but Deloplaine still caught a lot of heat as Phillips began to light things up.  Asheville will be looking for thei 5th head coach in just 11 seasons.

Raleigh 14 at Wilson 20

Last week Marcus Musson won the game with a last second pass play.  This game looked to be setup the same way.  With right at a minute left Raleigh took over after recovering an onside kick.  Musson completed his first pass, then dropped back facing a Tobs blitz.  The blitz was picked up and Musson had Sid Pagel in man to man coverage.  He threw deep to Pagel who had gotten a step on his man, but it was just overthrown in the end zone.   That would have tied the game and given Raleigh a chance at the win with the extra point, but it was not to be.  Musson would fall under pressure on 3rd down, then get sacked on 4th down ending Raleigh's hope for another dramatic win.  Wilson meanwhile was fighting to win the division and seemingly watching it all fall apart in front of them.  They played a brilliant first half and jumped on the key Musson fumble deep in Raleigh territory in the 3rd quarter giving them a 20-7 lead.  Then the tension set in and it was a nail biter coming down the wire.  But Wilson held on for the win taking Joe Maryland back to the playoffs.

Durham 0 at Greensboro 24

The complete collapse of Durham ends being shut out for the second straight game.  They came into this game with the worst rated defense and offense and they looked it.  They had no answer for the Greensboro offense as they piled up 443 net yards.  For Greensboro it's a positive end to a very disappointing season.  Their only bright spot is Gordon Brown who had a fabulous year.

Greensboro
Jason Fisher 19/34 337yds 1TD
Giles Dixon 31car/88yds 2TDs 1 Fumble
Gordon Brown 15tt/10rec/248yds 1TD
Alex Armstrong 7 tackles 4 knockdowns

Charles Kissane 13/29 114yds 1Int

Rocky Mount 20 at Kinston 18

Kinston came into this game 2-3 at home and 5-1 on the road.  In fact they had beaten the Leafs in Rocky Mount just two weeks ago, but it was not to be today.  The Kinston defense really struggled to stop Rocky Mount and their offense failed to take advantage of some good scoring opportunities.  Duane Buckley was 1 of 3 on field goals.  Kinston fans saw their team go down in the final game opening up the door for Wilson to potentially win the division.  With a win Wilson would have the same overall record as Kinston but a better division record.  Now everyone just has to sit back and wait.  The Leafs got to play a potential spoiler which is the best thing to come their way this season.  It's been a rough year for the Leafs who have never really found their footing.

Rocky Mount
Jon Query 24/32 280yds 2TDs 1Int
Darryl Grace 17car/49yds 1 Fumble
Mike Morissey (nickle back) 1 tackle 3 knockdowns 1 Int

Kinston
Marion Sorenson 20/35 213yds 1Int
Bernie Hall 17car/91yds 2TDs
Ken Strzelczyk 12tt/7rec/108yds
Clifford Morton 6 tackles 1 Int

Gastonia 37 at Asheville 25

Gastonia put on an offensive clinic racking up 532yds net yards on offense.  Harold Brooks, Olav Flores, and James Carter were all excellent as top stars should be.  The only worry for Gastonia was that their defense gave up 338yds to Asheville.

This locks the wild card spot for Gastonia who would win a tie breaker over Charlotte putting them in the playoffs for the 3rd time in the last 4 years.  This year they will match up against Salisbury instead of Burlington.  They've had much better success against Salisbury so they are hoping for a big upset.  Asheville will have to regroup again finishing in last place and try and figure out someway to improve.

Gastonia
Harold Brooks 23/33 355yds 4TDs
James Carter 28car/180yds
Olav Flores 11tt/9rec/164yds 1TD
Scott Morgan 4 tackles 1 sack 1 knockdown

Asheville
Erik Waters 19/33 262yds 3TDs
Brett Stinson 18car/41yds
Jarrod Romine 12tt/8rec/111yds 1TD
Jonnie Redden 6tt/5rec/111yds 2TDs
Jeffrey Gustin 10 tackles

Salisbury 0 at Gastonia 21

In a real shocker Gastonia shut out the undefeated Popes to tie them with Charlotte going into the final week and put themselves in a great situation to take the wild card spot.  They travel to Asheville for their final game of the season while Charlotte has to host what will be a very angry Popes team.  Salisbury struggled on all levels of offense and could not contain running back James Carter who went for 148yds on 19 carries.

Gastonia
Harold Brooks 20/43 273yds 3TDs 1Int 1 Fumble
James Carter 19car/148yds

Raleigh 20 at Rocky Mount 17

With 6:38 left in the game and the score tied at 10 Raleigh's Royce Elliott fell on a botched pitch at the Rocky Mount 16yd line.  The Leafs defense held forcing a Mario Gresham field goal and giving Raleigh a 13-10 lead.  Rocky Mount took the ball over on their 20yd line with 5:08 left in the game.  Jon Query slowly lead the Leafs upfield coming up to a 3rd and 20 on their own 44yd line with 1:33 left.  Query dropped back and fell under pressure.  He broke away from a defensive lineman and while running to his right threw a strike to William Patterson on the sideline for a 23yd pickup and a first down at the Raleigh 33.  On the next play Query hit John Alexander in the end zone to give Rocky Mount a 17-13 lead with :52 left.

Raleigh took the ball over at their own 36 with :50 left in the game.  Marcus Musson threw incomplete on his first attempt then hit William Winslow for 12yds, then Winslow again for 9yds, getting them into Leaf territory at the 43yd line with :24 left.  He hit John Alli next for 15yds and the Capitols stopped the clock at :11 with a timeout and still had one remaining.  He went back to Winslow on the next play for 12yds down to the Leaf 15 and they managed to get a timeout called with :01 left in the game. Musson with good protection found James Anderson in the end zone with no time left to give Raleigh their 5th win of the season.

Greensboro 0 at Winston-Salem 15

A solid performance from George Prater and the Twins defense helped to give Winston-Salem their 3rd win of the season.  It's been a disappointing season for the Twins, but late season wins against Greensboro and Durham help.  Greensboro on the other hand has not had a very good season.  There had been hope coming into this season of making a run at the playoffs, but those hopes seemed to fall apart almost as soon as the season started.

Winston-Salem
George Prater 18/28 187yds
Edward Tanner 16car/73yds
Garfield Soft 11tt/7rec/69yds
Shawn Carter 5 tackles 2 sacks 1 knockdown
Clarence Brennan 5 for 6 long of 50yds

Greensboro
Jason Fisher 13/31 180yds
Giles Dixon 15car/57yds
Gordon Brown 12tt/5rec/101yds
Mike Jennison 0 for 3

Wilson 21 at Durham 0

Definitely the best game the Tobs have played all year, they took advantage of two big plays from Brandon Sanders to jump out to a quick lead and kept constant pressure on Charles Kissane the entire game.  Kissane still managed to have a good game, but he missed two very critical passes, both to Bob Brun who had gotten behind the defense.  Both times Kissane overthrew Brun.  Ken Haslip continued his wonderful season with another big day of running.

For the Tobs to make the playoffs it all comes down to next week.  They will be hosting Raleigh while Kinston hosts Rocky Mount.  They have to win and Kinston has to lose in order for the Tobs to have a chance at the playoffs.

Wilson
Jeff Gray 13/31 190yds 1TD 1Int
Ken Haslip 25car/131yds 2TDs
John Johnson 3 tackles 3 sacks

Durham
Charles Kissane 17/28 178yds
Maurice Bloom 17car/16yds 1 fumble
James Cunningham 8 tackles 1 sack

Kinston 17 at Asheville 3

It started off looking like Asheville might give Kinston a game.  But critical penalties later it began to look like Asheville would blow any chance they may have of winning.  In the end it just looked like they took a solid beating from a much better team.

Kinston has won the last two weeks when they needed it.  Marion Sorenson looked great in this one and of course their defense was the key as always.  Asheville continues to struggle.  It will be another off-season of trying to figure out how to fix things.

Kinston
Marion Sorenson 15/26 174yds 1TD
Bernie Hall 24car/91yds
Matt Trumbull  6tt/6rec/90yds 1TD
John Hallock 1 tackle 1 knockdown 1 Int 1TD
John Margolf 1 tackles 3 sacks

Asheville
Erik Waters 12/23 145yds 1Int
Brett Stinson 12car/36yds
Jarrod Romine 10tt/5rec/79yds
Keith Geathers  10 tackles 1 sack
